We are all excited that this is the 25th year for this event, where you can meet and mingle with a lot of the social action groups in and around Oxford. Along with the chance to network and do a little pre-Christmas shopping, we also have our famous cafe where you can enjoy some tasty soup and home baking accompanied by some cool tunes from Nick Gill and friends.

We have a good selection of different organizations coming to the fair, and there
are still some stalls available. So if you would like to book one,
or know somebody who might be interested, please get in touch on 01865
761697 / or by email (oxfamowf@gmail.com).
The stalls are very good value for money - £25 for non-profit making,
£35 for profit-making - and enable you to be part of a
long-established,
successful and positive event which sees more than 1,000 visitors
coming through the doors every year.

Similarly if any members or supporters can help out on the day, or with making food, please contact Tim and Jan Treacher (treachers@phonecoop.coop).
Borrowing the costumes from Oxfam HQ, we dressed as the Chancellor to protest that, despite the positive noises made at June's G8 summit, nothing has actually been done to stop powerful global companies avoiding paying tax in developing countries, money which is vitally needed to overcome poverty. In fact, a recent amendment to the UK's Finance Bill which would have made it harder for companies to avoid paying tax in developing countries was overturned.

Chris Garrard, a student campaigner with Oxfam, said:

‘We've dressed as George Osborne to highlight that it is the treasury who need to take the lead on making company ownership information public. Many large companies have set-up and use ‘phantom firms’, dummy businesses where they avoid tax by stashing away profits overseas. Proposed amendments to the recent finance bill that would have started to tackle this issue were defeated but with the backing of local MPs like Andrew, we can apply the pressure to make sure the call for change isn't ignored.’

The ‘Enough Food IF’ campaign is raising the issue of tax dodging as just one of the root causes of why 1 billion people around the world go hungry every day. Developing countries currently lose more every year through various forms of ‘tax dodging’ than they receive in aid – more than enough money to end global hunger twice over. Andrew agreed to raise our concern with the government, having already supported the Enough Food for Everyone...IF campaign at its Oxford launch back in January.

The Enough Food For Everyone...IF coalition is asking supporters to Tweet David Cameron to stop 'phantom' companies being set up purely to avoid paying tax. If you use Twitter, please take this action.

Naturally, straight after our lobby meeting, we Tweeted, and put a link up on OOG's Facebook page, so please share if you can!

This national media stunt included 500 people dressing up as George, and getting photographed with the iconic red budget boxes all over London, before a mass photo-shoot in parliament Square, which reached national and international media. All the Georges spelt out the words 'IF' when seen from above - the name of the joint campaign, of which Oxfam is a part, to get fair access to food for everyone across the world, for which aid is a necessary though far from sufficient condition.

Unfortunately we can't confirm exactly which Georges were OOG members in these photographs!

Since the stunt, we had the great news that the Chancellor did actually make his historic announcement to meet the target this year, making the UK the first G8 country to do so.

This is a 43-year old commitment, and OOG members past and present should feel proud of their part in this achievement, which is something we've been lobbying our politicians for for the entire life of the Group!

buy OOG anniversary t-shirts and some well-earned cakes and other
refreshments when you’ve finished.

There’s a dedicated workgroup
organising the event but we need members to come forward to help with
the following:

Do you have any memorabilia
(photos, facts or stats) for a display about OOG’s work over the
last 25 years? We’d love to hear from you if so!

If you don’t want to do the walk
itself, we need volunteers to man the Lake Street stall, signing
walkers in and out and selling cakes and t-shirts.

We need cakes and biscuits to sell
to the hungry walkers. If you think you can help, please let us
know.

We’ll post more updates very soon –
please watch this space for how to get involved. We’d love you to
join us.

This event is about celebrating the great things we've achieved as the Oxford Oxfam Group. As celebrations aren't usually onerous, we've decided not to ask you to fundraise as part of the walk (though if you'd really like to that's fine too) - we're just hoping as many people as possible can come and enjoy the walk with us. In order to cover the costs of running the event, there will be a small entry fee of £5 (£3 concessions). We look forward to seeing you there.Naveed Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10139473010200123936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4772729338327427853.post-17994212316489292582013-01-24T07:42:00.002-08:002013-01-24T07:57:01.554-08:00IF campaign launched in Oxford! The 'Enough Food For Everyone...IF' campaign, a new multi-agency campaign against hunger, launched in Oxford with an open-air breakfast in freezing weather outside St Michael's of Northgate, Cornmarket Street, today (24 January) at 10am.

The IF campaign is for an end to the unnecessary hunger and malnutrition which blights the lives of millions, in a world in which there is enough food to go round. We are calling for:

an end to the land grabs by big companies that leave families landless, hungry, and destitute

an end to tax avoidance by companies, so that governments have enough income to support their farming sectors

an increase to international aid in line with the decades-old promise to increase it to 0.7% of our national income

transparency among companies and governments so we can see what they are actually doing to help or hinder people's access to food.

Guests at the campaign launch, including MP Andrew Smith, and local representatives of the groups involved in the campaign (including me) were lucky enough to have real bread and jam, tea and coffee - I had assumed it would be faked for the photoshoot!

Hardy volunteers including Caroline Brown and Jan and Tim Treacher explained the campaign to curious passers by, as the rest of us did the hard work of sitting and quaffing while being photographed for the Oxford Mail (your turn next time guys!).

Very many thanks to everyone who helped out in any way at last weekend's One World Fair. From the people doing sterling work in the cafe and kitchen, to those on our campaigning and book selling stall, and everyone who placarded, cooked, advertised, or helped in any other way, you were all part of its success. Particular thanks must go to Tim and Jan, Ally and Martin, and all their friends and relations (and others) who worked so hard behind the scenes and in the run-up to the event.

Oxford Student Oxfam Group member Chris Garrard took some great photos of the event and made a short video - if you can get on Facebook, have a look at them here:

http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/groups/2238260390/

Our stall was graced by this rather colourful 7-foot high cardboard cut-out "Food Superhero". We spoke to quite a lot of people about Oxfam's GROW campaign, and asked childern to colour in their own superhero pictures - lots of fun. Thanks to Joella, Caroline and Charlotte for making our Superhero, named Felicity by a young visitor to our stall!
Total takings from the Fair were a very creditable £918.05.
One of OOG's founder members and former Chair, David Green, wrote to the Commitee this week to tell us that it's almost 25 years since we were founded. David writes:

"Can this possibly be true? Google tells me that a banana split 455 miles long broke the world record on 30 April 1988. Well, I'm not surprised. Also on that day Stephen Fry delivered his famous funny monologue version of the BBC's weather forecast. "

"Google doesn't add that on that same day the Oxford Oxfam Group was born, born in the sense that it held its first event on that memorable Saturday. It was an event, neither fundraising, nor campaigning, that simply invited Oxford's public to St Michael's Church in Cornmarket, to talk about world poverty and Oxfam's responses; here, in the downstairs room, six people set to to let guests know that a new Oxfam Group was on the block. And that it meant business. The event was called, modestly, 'Time for a Chat'. New members were quickly forthcoming."

"Because you are all brilliant at maths, you will quickly have worked out the relationship between 30 April 1988 and 30 April 2013, and that 30 April 2013 marks OOG's 25th birthday!"

"Now, the Group didn't celebrate its 20th birthday in any special way, but I guess you will agree with me that a quarter century should not go unrecorded. I have asked Naveed to make sure that Oxfam's staff and Director know that the volunteer Group on their doorstep has reached a milestone that everyone can be proud of. But, as your sole founder member, I asked if I might make an approach to you all and to urge you to consider how you could help to mark the occasion. For myself, if there were enough people interested I would be glad to lead a walk along the route of the original OOGWalk. This was the one that in the 1990s took you from Hinksey up to Youlbury and Boars Hill, then back through Happy Valley to Lake Street, a distance of some 12 miles. Will you suggest and help organize another appropriate marker?"

"Since those six people (Bridget Browne, Tessa Brodetsky, David Brookes, Mark Haeffner, Graham Hooper and I) pushed the boat out in 1988, many hundreds of people have pulled at the OOG oars. Many thousands of pounds have been raised for Oxfam's work – well into six figures. Dozens of campaigns have been supported, and many schools introduced to development education. Though Oxfam's work will never be done, though we may all be ashamed that still, in 2012, countless millions of people still live in terrible poverty, yet we can take some comfort from the fact that we have allied ourselves with a great, honest and just cause. And we have done it through the Oxford Oxfam Group. Let's mark this birthday!"

I hope that we'll be able to discuss this proposal at our AGM, coming up on 6 December - please do come along (you'll also get the chance to hear about Oxfam's work in Bangladesh).
Naveed Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10139473010200123936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4772729338327427853.post-44105338031118187002012-09-22T04:10:00.000-07:002012-09-22T04:10:16.430-07:00Latest campaigning action from OOG

You'll see from the last post that Oxfam is campaigning on 'food justice' for all, and OOG's modest contribution so far has been to take the campaign to the Elder Stubbs Festival in August, a fantastic local festival just full of people engaged in making positive food choices.

Also in August, OOG campaigners promoted the Robin Hood Tax, an increasingly popular way of raising money for development, climate change mitigation and other good causes. The Oxford Mail covered our mini drama outside the Oxfam shop in Broad Street, after which we made this film parodying the 'official' Robin Hood Tax film on the campaign's website. All good fun, and in all seriousness, in 30 years, the idea of such a tax on financial transactions has moved from the fringes to the mainstream, with France having actually enacted one.

The campaign group meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6.30pm in the Mitre - why not join us?Naveed Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10139473010200123936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4772729338327427853.post-23449719865700043782012-09-22T03:55:00.003-07:002012-09-22T03:56:33.208-07:00One World Fair 2012

Well, that's a bit embarrassing! No posts for a whole year. Never mind, the One World Fair is the biggest event of the OOG year, and it looks like this is our 22nd! This year, we're hoping it will be better than ever, and as well as promoting local campaigning on development, the environment and fair trade, we're promoting Oxfam's GROW campaign for sustainable and fair food production for all. Lots of local groups are doing something about a better food future, whether it's fair trade, food waste reduction, or growing better. Oxfam is celebrating these 'food heroes' and if you are taking action, why not get in touch for some joint celebration!
As always, it was a long and tiring day for a number of hard-working volunteers (you know who you are!), with a very busy cafe operation selling out of food quite early on. The Nick Gill trio added to the ambience in the cafe, and while stallholders reported slower than usual sales in the main hall, and the number of visitors was a bit down on previous years, there was nevertheless a good buzz of activity throughout the day, and in total, we made almost £1,800 of from running the fair (taking account of the cafe, room hire and income from stalls, but excluding the Oxfam shop presence).

The workgroup met to debrief on Tuesday, and we plan to survey all our stallholders to ask how it went for them, including any ideas they can give us for improving the event. All ideas are welcome - as well as offers to get involved in running the next one! Work on the 22nd One World Fair will start in May 2012.

Jan Tansley from Broad Street shop on the Oxfam stallNaveed Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10139473010200123936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4772729338327427853.post-19066002361854979482011-11-14T04:59:00.000-08:002011-11-14T05:32:36.094-08:00OOG's busy autumn! It's normal for autumn to be OOG's busiest time of year, and our biggest event of the year, the One World Fair, is now less than a week away! It's this Saturday, 19th November, at Oxford Town Hall, and should be, as always, a colourful event, with a host of fairtrade retailers booked in, alongside local campaigning organisations on development and the environment - and of course, our vegetarian cafe. Offers of help (and particularly donations of food for the cafe) are very welcome - please reply to this post. Our former book fair supremo Helen O'Neill having gone to Madagascar for a year, our new co-ordinator Jon Mazliah and the stalwart team of pricers and helpers on the day did a sterling job, confounding last-minute worries that we might not have enough stock or volunteers. But we pulled it off, raising a very creditable £2, 370. Very many thanks to everyone who did their bit. Dates of the spring book fair are still to be confirmed.

Forthcoming events are the AGM, on 7 December in the Short Room, Friends' Meeting House, from 7.30pm, where we'll be electing the new Committee, and the now-traditional OOG curry night at the Bombay restaurant in Jericho on 14 December.Naveed Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10139473010200123936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4772729338327427853.post-60344127860529960872011-03-20T10:49:00.000-07:002011-03-20T10:52:38.371-07:00Book fairIt's less than 3 weeks until our book fair on Saturday 9th April. This sounds like a long time away, but there is a lot to do and so preparations are starting up.

There's a strong existing group of people to do these things, but help would be very much appreciated (to achieve more; to do new things; to give established hands some assistance or a rest). Helen is particularly interested to find additional help with the publicity (you can never do too much publicity). Because there is a strong existing group, newcomers will find plenty of old hands to guide them in what needs to be done.

One vital task is a series of pricing evenings, where OOG members get together in the store rooms to sort and price books. Overall, the amount raised for Oxfam (and for Oxfam's contributions to major disasters, where Oxfam raises money via the DEC) was £11,304.37. That's up on 2009, where we raised £8,900, and a broadly similar result to 2008 and 2007.
Net income for our major fundraisers was as follows:

• Haiti DEC street collection - £3,335 (passed directly to DEC as per DEC rules; does not appear in OOG accounts)
• Book Fairs - £4,882.98
• Walk - £1,690.35 (£947.76 through our books, and £742.59 raised via VirginMoneyGiving, resulting in it going to Oxfam directly)
• One World Fair - £1,676.10 (because the One World Fair is late in the accounting year, the final total for the 2010 Fair may differ slightly from this)

These ventures all did better than in 2009 - Bookfairs were about the same; The One World Fair did 35% better, the Walk 56% better. The bulk of our fundraising now comes from these regular ventures, which year after year turn in excellent - indeed remarkable - results. Consistently netting Oxfam about £10,000 per year is a significant and unusual achievement for a volunteer group, and we need to remember to congratulate ourselves. Naturally, it would always be better to do more, and to add more events and activities. (Suggestions are always welcome).

A full set of accounts is available on request.

We had a quiet year on campaigning in 2010 - but aim to do more in 2011 (hence next Wednesday's campaigns meetup).

The committee elected for 2011 was:
• Chris Baker - Chair
• Christine Tucker - Treasurer
• Anastasia Heath - Membership Secretary
• Naveed Chaudhri - Minutes Secretary
• Jan Treacher - Committee Member.

Rachel Walsh (Rachel Iliffe until she married this year) has stood down from committee duties after many years service, but is remaining an OOG member - thank you for all you have done, Rachel.

This gives us a functional committee (nearly identical to last year's). The committee would be delighted to co-opt further members if anyone would like to help - in particular, we would appreciate help with OOG publicity.Chris Bakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16090777906976832462noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4772729338327427853.post-62644043182696765502011-01-09T04:31:00.000-08:002011-01-09T04:33:33.096-08:00Campaigns meetupOOG Members are meeting on Wednesday evening 12 January to plan campaigning activities. happes to Oxfam Shop Donations?A recent article in the Guardian newspaper has a fascinating (and approving) look at the process that starts up when a supporter A fundraising initiative about New Years' Resolutions raised a small amount of money - you could of course raise money for Oxfam this way in 2011!

January was also when the Haitian Earthquake hit, and OOG had one of the most successful street collections in our history, raising an amazing £3,335.

As the spring came in, our March Bookfair raised £2,175.41. The Autumn one would go on to do even better.

In June we organised the OOOGWalk, a sponsored walk around Port Meadow. It was the same route as in 2009, but with a lot longer a buildup, and also our first venture into the wacky world of Twitter (@OOGwalk). We were rewarded by a significant increase both in the numbers of walkers and the amount raised.
